Fun Facts about Our Area
- Sanford was named for C.O. Sanford, a civil engineer, who oversaw the building of rail lines in the area.
- The region’s white coastal sands mixed with the Piedmont clay create the perfect formula for clay bricks. In 1959, Sanford produced 10% of America’s bricks and was named "Brick Capital of the USA."
- Sanford is full of history – it boasts 16 locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Among them are Euphronia Presbyterian Church, John D. McIver Farm, and the Railroad House.
- Fayetteville, also known as the “All-American City,” has received the prestigious “All-America City Award” from the National Civic League on three different occasions.
- In 1783, Fayetteville was incorporated and named in honor of Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero who significantly aided the American forces during the American Revolutionary War. Fayetteville was the first city in the United States to be named in his honor.
- Fort Bragg was named after Confederate general Braxton Bragg and is home to the U.S. Army airborne and Special Forces, U.S. Army Forces Command, and U.S. Army Reserve Command.
- Fort Bragg and Pope Field pump about $4.5 billion a year into the region's economy, making them the backbone of the region’s economy and Fayetteville one of the best retail markets in the country.
- In 2010, Fayetteville was ranked in the Top 5 Defense Industry Development areas in the U.S. Eight of the ten top American defense contractors are located in the area, including Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, and L-3 Communications.
